Chris Cardell And The Advertising Standards Authority

There is one thing I hate and that is big companies with a department full of low grade lawyers trying to silence innocent members of the public when they try mentioning the truth.

This might ring some bells with the guys at Cardell Media.

Cardell Media were told off by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to stop using a particular style of mailshot (aka junk mail) because it was misleading to UK consumers.

However UK regulations obviously don't mean much to US companies and it has been reported that they are still using the marketing technique. It involves trying to persuade people to visit a website by using a fake newspaper clipping and a fake post-it note.

If you are an HSBC customer you will already know that getting old statements out of the online banking system is a nightmare. You can download recent statements as CSV files but any statements considered "Previous" are not available for download.

You can view them on the screen but what if you want an electronic copy for your records?

It would be great if HSBC allowed you to download your statements as PDF files every month as American Express do.
So what can you do instead?

Mozy and Carbonite seemed to be mentioned whenever the topic of online backup came up so I decided to give them a try.
Their staff were so rude that I didn't even get an apology. Last year they claimed to have attempted a delivery while I was out. I wasn't. They simply lied.
Plantfood Supplier Or Drug Dealer? You Decide!

I had never heard of this "legal high" drug. It is legal in the UK and is referred to as Mephedrone, Methylone, MCAT, MEOW and 4MMC. I did some academic research.

One supplier of this drug is Arran Mahony based in Leeds. Apparently Mephedrone, Methylone, MCAT, MEOW and 4MMC aren't party drugs after all. They are simply plant food. Arran really must like his plants because he claims to offer this stuff at unbeatable prices ... and he sells it by the gram.

Oracle BI Publisher Chart Generator

Creating charts using the Oracle BI Publisher Word Template Builder is fairly straightforward. Once you've got your XML input data you simply load it within Word and run the chart wizard.

If the wizard creates the chart you want then you are lucky. Modifying the chart or doing any customisation usually involves editing the raw XML definition. However, there is almost no decent documentation available for tweaking the XML and is something of a black art.

So I created the <a href="http://www.mattsbits.co.uk/webtools/bi_chart_generator/">Oracle BI Publisher Chart Generator</a>.

Avatar - My Opinion

I just saw Avatar (in 3D naturally). It is by far the most visually stunning film I have seen and instantly dates many films by a decade or in some cases confines them to the dustbin. How many films will I watch now and think "nice but shame it wasn't in 3D".

The trailers made me worry Avatar was going to look like a computer game but that fear was washed away in the first five minutes. The effects are flawless.

A film can't rely on 3D. It still needs to be a good film but 3D is allowed to actually enhance a film just like colour and sound do. A good film is a good film but how many films have you bothered watching recently in black & white with mono sound? There are plenty out there with good plots. If you've still got your own teeth the answer is probably none.

Unfortunately Microsoft don't appear to have provided any easy way of editing, trimming, cutting or converting these files. If you record a TV programme and want to remove the junk at the start and end or want to remove commercial breaks you are stuffed.
