Chris Cardell And The Advertising Standards Authority

There is one thing I hate and that is big companies with a department full of low grade lawyers trying to silence innocent members of the public when they try mentioning the truth.

This might ring some bells with the guys at Cardell Media.

Cardell Media were told off by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to stop using a particular style of mailshot (aka junk mail) because it was misleading to UK consumers.

However UK regulations obviously don't mean much to US companies and it has been reported that they are still using the marketing technique. It involves trying to persuade people to visit a website by using a fake newspaper clipping and a fake post-it note.

Online Backup : Mozy Vs Carbonite

(NOTE : Article updated. Please read the final few paragraphs)

I decided to try an online backup service in order to better protect my really important data. This mainly consisted of my photo collection.

I was already using a set of hard drives to create backups some of which I kept at another location but it was difficult to keep these up to date.

Mozy and Carbonite seemed to be mentioned whenever the topic of online backup came up so I decided to give them a try.

I've tried both of them and here are my conclusions :

Name & Shame : Worst Companies I Have Dealt With

I'm sick to death of poor/low quality service from UK companies. Here is my list of companies to avoid.

I will update this article every time I receive an unacceptable level of service.

City Link, Bristol - Once I collected a flat screen monitor from them only for them to drop it at my feet. Luckily for them it survived the fall. Their staff were so rude that I didn't even get an apology. Last year they claimed to have attempted a delivery while I was out. I wasn't. They simply lied. This week they claim to have made two deliveries but mysteriously failed to leave a calling card. How difficult is it to drop a piece of card board through a letterbox? Beware.

Plantfood Supplier Or Drug Dealer? You Decide!

I was just browsing the BBC News site when I came across the sad news that two teenagers had died in North Lincolnshire. Both are thought to have taken the legal drug mephedrone.

I had never heard of this "legal high" drug. It is legal in the UK and is referred to as Mephedrone, Methylone, MCAT, MEOW and 4MMC. I did some academic research.

One supplier of this drug is Arran Mahony based in Leeds. Apparently Mephedrone, Methylone, MCAT, MEOW and 4MMC aren't party drugs after all. They are simply plant food. Arran really must like his plants because he claims to offer this stuff at unbeatable prices ... and he sells it by the gram.
